Trains Model

What is the best book or a starter kit for a beginner to model Trains?

One of my best friends said for years that his father made the Model Trains and had a great Model Train Table before her father died. He said he wanted to do something similar to it when I'm older, partly because it is one of the few memories he has of his father. I only recently remembered this conversation and I found a starter kit or an informational book for beginners can be good for him as a birthday or Christmas gift. Does anyone know anything about this hobby that might be able to make some good suggestions?

Great idea … the books I would suggest come from Kalambach Publishing (which printed miniature trains Magazine): The have a nice series of books that touch the foundation, and also deals with "realistic" operations and layout design. Here is a link to get started: http://kalmbachcatalog.stores.yahoo.net/model-railroading-books-model-railroading-for-beginners.html You really suggest is "realistic" Operations: http://kalmbachcatalog.stores.yahoo.net/12231.html
