Brass Model Trains

Can a Model Railroad is set to automatically go in the other direction when running off the track?

I have a fairly large Thomas the Tank Engine Train set with a Lionel transformer. This set was handed to my son. Instead of keeping track of a complete circuit, I was thinking set the theme so that when the train reaches the end of the track will automatically reverse and go the other way. Don'tt I know nothing about model Trains, so I hope I'm explaining this correctly. I think the issue is O gauge. The track has only two brass rails, no third rail. Processors Lionel has a forward / reverse wwitch and a speed dial. Thankd!

It is possible to do that. Two photoelectric cells, one near each end of the tracks. When the train breaks the light beam, the photocell can be connected with the electronic assistant, to stop the train, reverse voltage transformer and restart the train going the other way. Circuits are needed, a couple of timers and a double pole double throw relay to replace the forward and reverse switch on the transformer. Another SPST relay to turn the transformer on and off between the change in direction. The best way to do this project is to find a local electronics such Once a high school kid. Ask friends to see if they can point to a little help. Other ways would be with a small team or a laptop PLC. Other sensors could be used instead of solar cells. You may republish this issue, including my suggestions and ideas and see if anyone can create a diagram wiring and parts list. Sorry, not as interesting as this project would be, I can not devote time to it. Wingman
